Hot Weather Techniques for Installing Epoxy Floor Coatings

Now that summer is on its way, it’s time to think about how the increase in temperature can affect applying Epoxy floor coatings. The key to a successful installation is to work with the environment and the temperature limitations of the Epoxy flooring products.

Start by checking the application temperature requirements of the Epoxy floor coating. If you are using multiply layers, be sure to check the specifications for each one since they can be different. When working in a hot environment it’s important to remember to store your Epoxy, and any additives, in a room temperature environment that is 70 -80 degrees.  Keeping the product at those temperatures for a day before the install will help the Epoxy to cure faster when applied to the concrete floor. Product that is too hot has less viscosity and can dry slower.

When traveling to a job, be sure to keep any product with black lids out of the sun so they don’t heat up too quickly. If the Epoxy does reach temperatures higher than 80 degrees, you can use ice to cool it down, or even store it in a cooler when traveling if it’s in the back of a truck in direct sunlight.

We recommend using smaller product portions to avoid the Epoxy product heating and drying too fast. This also helps prevent the product from evaporating in extremely hot temperatures, or poor flash-off times that can cause irregularities in the Epoxy coats.  Having the right amount of labor to get the job completed efficiently is also helpful.
